Two days ago, after a bunch of crudely planned date nights that eventually (and mighty grudgingly) had to be aborted, I have, finally, been able to get together with my Padawans.

Woo hoo.

Everything happened on a whim.

I remember lashing out my tapsilog-craving-driven frustration on social media (excuse moi for being so arti arti), blacking out, then suddenly finding myself seated with Hannah and Monica at a Tapsi ni Vivian joint somewhere in Marikina. Cool.

We got to catch up on a lot of things—newfound hobbies, art, deteriorating love affairs, subcultures… pretty much just basic shtuff found on the life lately list. There’s so much to say, but I honestly didn’t know where to start, and had, in the end, decided to sort of just shut up.

Do you know how it feels like having (and soon giving in to) the urge to intervene with your own talking just because suddenly there’s this need to present a back story such that no holes will appear? Yes? Well, suck on that. No worries, tho, you’re not alone.

I’m a pretty lousy storyteller. If there’s one thing I’m good at in this field it’ll be messing up my chum’s mental construction of timelines. I say a lot of irrelevant shit, and since we’ve very limited time that night, I didn’t say much about the dude I’ve got my eyes on.

(Ew, mush.)

I found it excruciatingly tricky trying to focus on one thing with all these strips of memories suddenly turning up in my brain guts.

(Ew, more mush.)

Okay.

In other news, we’ve visited a mighty prissy cupcake saloon sitting nearby.

Just recently my mum has acquired this habit of rummaging through Metro Deals thingamajigum. She'd bring us to random dining areas most people probably have not heard of yet. She and Monica are alike in the sense that the two of them are hipsta foodies. It is extremely a huge pleasure to be part of their food trips okayyyy

This Sunday mum drove us to BGC to attend to her table reservation and inevitably got lost on the road thrice. Ha ha ha

Espresso coffee, steamed milk, human heart

Despite of all the hassle Monica draws from acad-related shit, she still seemed to find time to hunt for enthralling, artsy fartsy dining spots, so i guess it can be concluded that she really has decided to take this delicatessen-hunting jazz seriously. I'm glad that she has found her new passion yihee (I still miss the emo kid in you, though)

Earlier today, we had coffee at Café Nui. It was formerly known as Biksa Café, pero apparently it underwent a change of management sans a change in both moniker and interior. Mocs had read about it it in some food blog that featured Marikina food hunter go-to's, and noted that the interior had lost a lot of ornamentation. It didn't bother me, though. Artworks were still fastened to the wall, but it was sort of unfulfilling to see only three sets of styles embedded in the pieces. There wasn't much variety, plus i wasn't able to understand fully appreciate the contemporary works. I think I just need to enhance my ability to communicate with visual art pieces... if i even have such in the first place haha

Chause. Mukhang bigla akong magcri-critic-critican dito hahaha

Sure, the place sported a bunch butt-friendly upholstery, but we sort of wanted to try out the duyan-esque love seat that appeared to be made of abaca. I don't know about Monica, pero I was attracted to its roof. Parang ang sarap magbahay-bahayan and stuff eh. Unfortunately, they only had two pieces of those: one was exposed to metropolitan shit because it was situated outside the café, while the one situated inside was already occupied

I had a cup of cappuccino (P75) and a piece of their velvet cupcake topped with zesty cream cheese frosting (P55). I do not have enough basis to judge their cappuccino, but i think that the syrup they have provided wasn't enough. The cupcake on the other hand lacked velvety and the cream cheese frosting had the right amount of sourness. It went kind of well with the cappuccino's bitterness

Ang feeler ko talaga hahahaha

Monica had a cup of white hot chocolate and a serving of spicy tuna pasta with mushroom sauce. I have to admit that I wish I just asked for a cup of what Monica had instead

Look at my drink, though-- it flaunted a silhouette of a heart! A real human heart

Obligatory selfie

I didn't have enough guts to take photos of the place. Here's the best one I can come up with

The best bit was that we were able to, erm, do (rather, talk about) lots of things. Apparently, four hours wasn't enough, but we just had to go because the staff were shooing us in the most placid manner they can, but they suck at trying to be cryptic. I appreciate their effort to be all suave, though

Also, we sang along to songs on dat The Voice app! Thank you Monica for telling me that I can be heard all over the place right after I finish singing the song. Thank you for not interrupting my singing. I know you wouldn't want the rest of the café's customers to miss my singing yelping skillz

By the way, you sound like a cat giving birth to a cow

Blueberries and sea-salted almonds go perfectly together and it's sort of sad to know that I am one of the last ones to find out. Whatever firework-inducing sensation is happening right now between my teeth and beneath my tongue may have been the sensation that ilusyonadang rodent's fat friend in Ratatouille must have felt the first time he munched on high-end cheese and berries.

*queue Katy Perry's Firework*

Had I come from the upper bourgeois, I would have been getting more from eating these pa-high end beauties. I could have been enjoying overpriced berries and nuts with sexy slices of Caciocavallo Podolico quezo and a bottle of of Cabernet Sauvignon, pinky tossed higher than that of your kumare's kilay when she found out that your kumpare has a younger, sexier kabit. Pair this lavish diet (if I were even going to eat all these up) with a gondola ride in Venice with my multibillionaire boyfriend matandang mayamang madaling mamatay fiancé.

Hey, shame on you for letting your friend get carried away!

In the end, I'm just one college undergrad trying to survive the first semester of my third year in UP Clark. Papa just happened to have brought home crates of blueberries and almonds and I just happened to have abducted such dearies during one of my frequent visits to the fridge. I'd love to live an ultra lavish lifestyle, though. Hihihi

Hello again, real world.

Shawarma unsupervised

This post marks the first time I had a shawarma. I just had to-- eating such beauty made me feel like one of the Avengers. Hahaha ilusyonada

Just as any other perstayms, I had my worries.

First, how the cow do you eat this? Is there a proper way of eating this? Do you bite a mouthful off like how you do a banana? Can you even treat it as if it were a banana, just plus the meatiness and minus the sweetness? Can you place it on the table, unroll it, and eat the contents maybe with some rice, employing the use of a spoon?

Second, is the paper wrapper edible? Why do they roll it with the pita in such a way that there's a humongous possibility for a devouring idiot to consume it? I was enjoying mine until I realized that I was nibbling on the paper wrapper too. Nice touch.

This is insane. I thought I was doing it wrong since the mayo was dripping the fuck out of its ass (huhu sayang). I just wish the shawarma was eaten the way it deserved to be eaten. Sorry, shawarma.

Third, even though I said yes when the attendants asked me if I would like mine spicy, it was not. I don't know. Maybe my Bicolano tongue was just bitching out. Still, Turk's was in red font so I was really expecting something super spicy, you know! Hahahaha birdbrain

Overall I would still prefer pizza, but if shawarma does contribute to the Avengers' super-ness, eh why not? Hihihi.

A few days ago I was shopping for groceries when these guys from Nestlé approached me and asked me if I wanted to take their nutritional risk assessment so I agreed thinking that they'd only want me to take a very quick survey. Suddenly the lady I was talking to introduced me to a nurse who started measuring my weight, height, and blood pressure (with the appropriate instruments of course). I can disclose the findings here but I'd rather keep it confidential because fuck yeah I'm guilty.

They kept asking me if I was pregnant or lactating. I almost said yes.
Measuring tape with a Nestlé on it so that I can mentally thank them whenever I keep watch of my waistline

I have learned that one's waistline is related to his/her BMI! What are the odds? It was not included in the BMI calculation though-- waistline standards were set in relation to one's height and weight. So anyway I've scored "normal" on their tests but I still have to watch my figure since my waistline dictates that I am only four inches away from health risks.

Lately, however, there came circumstances that made me choose to pick the unhealthy side instead. I will never ever trade the pleasure of eating for anything, so fuck da police health nazis.

Yesterday, Paolo decided to sleep over at my apartment. We decided to have dinner at KFC so he got each of us an order of Hotshots plus extra rice (hence two cups of rice each). Why the extra rice, you ask? Recently we have been arguing over who's really the macho-er one between us two, and, well, as the old saying goes (or was it even that old of a saying...)-- "Ang tunay macho ay laging may extra rice" (apparently I've just replaced "ang tunay na lalake" with "ang tunay na macho" since lalake's not quite applicable to me-- I have no dick okay). So I let myself pig out and honestly that was the first time in a long time (by long time I mean two weeks) I felt so fucking full. I also had to break my long-running fast on softdrinks because I forgot to tell him that I usually stick to drinking water whenever I eat out so he got me a Sprite-- he does not know anything about my eating habits yet since that was just only the fourth time we ate out together.

In the morning (today), he made tuna omelette for breakfast. He asked me if I would want rice with it but I was not accustomed to having rice for breakfast whenever I'm out of Rizal but I went for it anyway because I am so fucking macho. This time however I only had one cup of rice (he had two but that does not mean I already admit defeat okay).

Once I'm back in Rizal naman, I took a five-hour nap (glutton na nga sloth pa, sinong 'di tataba?). Mum (feeling British na naman ako as usual) woke me up because she needs someone to accompany her to her grocery shopping. Jill and I went with her knowing that there'd be binging opportunities because that was always the case with our mother. Everything, of course, went as expected. She treated us to Tokyo Tokyo. Jill had Pork Tonkatsu and my mum and I shared this Fried Chicken Karaage / Prawn & Vegetable Tempura meal for two even though I was fucking dying to try out their Godzilla Burger. Mum did not allow me to because of health concerns. Boriiiing. Tokyo Tokyo did not disappoint. We went grocery shopping later with puffed out tummies. Insert red iced tea cheers here.

Godzilla Burger is a sexy burger thus it has to be named after something so fuckin' sexy too.

I still have to find out if we'd still celebrate pizza day tomorrow. I just hope we do because we all know that an order of any cheesy chow can brighten up one's day-- or in my case, week.

Overall, I'd blame Paolo and the macho manifesto for having me bade adieu to good health and welcome a protracting waistline instead. Mum's treating us doesn't have anything to do with my bloating since it's normal for her to fatten us every week.

So bye I have to go now because dinner's ready. Happy eating binging!

Café Lidia

Howdy! Welcome to a segment of Juan Tralala Tries to Critic! Lol. Dry run lang 'to kasi baka seryosohin ko ang pagb-blog 'pag ako'y nasa working class na. Hahaha ilusyonada

Moving on.

In our household, Sunday is always pizza day. We (Jill and Jared and Mama and I) either go out to satisfy our cravings or just have them sexy things (yes pizza is fuckin sexy okay) delivered to our house.

Usually we go to Papa John's or Shakey's or Yellow Cab or Greenwich or Pizza Hut or Don Henrico's, but last Sunday Mum brought us to someplace different. Last Sunday we went to Café Lidia in Marikina.

One of the few pinaghirapang graffiti I have ever seen.

Medyo pa-ninja yung lugar, tago.

During the trip, Jared kept insisting that we dine at McDo's instead. Since we did not anyway, he was so full of bad vibes by the time we got to the café.

Jared, a.k.a. "Boy Bad Trip"

Jill the Feeling Redhead

The café had a really lovely interior (wow gumaganon). One would know that it used to be a residential unit after about a minute of getting a load of its structure. Cutesy vintage decor can be seen everywhere, pero I think that's kind of the trend with cafés nowadays (i.e. Café Noriter, Toll House, CBTL).

So I enjoyed the interior, okay. Unfortunately, the sight of a padlock at the corner of their WiFi ID made me kinda sad. Cafés would usually offer free WiFi-- well, clearly this one does not. I've nothing against it offering no WiFi, though (pero affected na affected naman hahaha).

Also, I got too used to using knives whenever we go out for pizza. Café Lidia, however, only place spoons and forks and napkins on their tables-- no knives huhu. Maybe they're trying to offer only those silverware Filipinos are most fond of using? Pero if they are how come their decors look imported? Bah whatever. I never got to use the silverware anyway aside from when I was taking in some Mozzarella Sticks (oo meron sila-- just like the other pizza places we go to woohoo!) since kinakamay ko lang yung pizza (oha mas Pinoy ang dating). Ang laking issue sakin ng knife, sorry.

When it comes to price, I think they're fair with setting their's. Thin crust pizzas (dahil wala namang thick) cost a little over Php 250 each, depending on which. Their cakes were priced at a level that can compete with eateries with larger names-- a slice of sansrival will cost you a glittering Php 90 (oo glittering dahil ako 'di ko afford at oo yung price lang ng sansrival tinignan ko dahil I was kind of thinking of bringing Monica here).

On to our orders:
  • Pizza Papa
  • Pizza Lidia
  • Mozzarella sticks
  • Some mocha drink really rich in whipped cream whose name I forgot na (Jill's)
  • Some chocolate drink which has less whipped cream than the mocha drink (Jared's)

Pizza Papa was a-okay but then I would like to apologize because I can never ever appreciate thin crust pizzas. Their wonderful crispiness distracts me from indulging myself in their cheesy form. Ayoko ng sabay-sabay na pleasure. Gusto ko one at a time.

Pizza Papa
I did not really appreciate Pizza Lidia because
  • It has black olives
  • It has green olives (for further injury, I think)
  • It has tuna in it (I'm sick of tuna okay)
  • The tomato and the layer of cheese was the only thing I liked about it

Anyway, people have different tastes so I'm not dissuading anyone from trying it. So go on. Try it.

Pizza Lidia
Earlier I mentioned that it has a lovely interior. Well, that was one of the reasons Mum brought us there. While waiting for the bill, Mum was insisting that we take a trip to the powder room. Eh ayaw namin. Yun pala she just wanted us to see its grandiose, er, interior. However, Jill was too busy with her anime and I was too full of pride so I didn't go anyway. I don't want Mum to emerge victorious in trying to show us something fab that she saw first before we did. Oo masama akong anak lol

The interior was good. The service was good. I guess we just ordered the wrong items. Overall, I give it a 2 out of 5 (wow gumaganon).
